The true purpose of the tongue is to praise God. But a profane mouth cannot praise God, not without cleansing and repentance. Clean mouth is a prerequisite for worship.

The tongue can be a powerful instrument for good but, if left unchecked, it could lead to detrimental consequences. James wises us up to see both the power and the peril of our tongue.

James illustrates saving faith with the examples of Abraham and Rahab. Faith is incomplete until it is proven with deeds of faith.

James shows us that saving faith always produces works of obedience to the Lord. Knowledge of orthodox beliefs doesn’t save, even as demons who know the truth about God are not saved.

James shows us the seriousness of discrimination against the needy and the failure to love neighbor as oneself. To fail the test of love is to fail the test of faith. Faith and love always go hand in hand.

James teaches us that personal favoritism and faith in Jesus do not mix. Furthermore, James exhorts us to see people as God sees them.

James gives us two acid tests for a legitimate devotion to God (“pure and undefiled religion”): mouth and mercy. The people of God direct our mouths toward good and godly things and we show mercy to those in distress.

Doers of the word are distinct from hearers-only. James warns against self-delusion and the need to avoid becoming forgetful hearers.

God should never be blamed for temptations in our lives. As James shows us, temptations arise out of our own desire for evil things. God is, instead, the source of everything good, even our salvation.

We are to boast in the right things. Those who are wealthy can become prone to boasting in their present circumstances, while the poor can become dejected about their present life. James encourages us to look ahead regardless of our circumstances. There is eternal salvation (“the crown of life”) to those who have endured and loved the Lord. Praise God for the wonderful gift of eternal life!
