Pilgrim's Progress

The Water and Oil of Faith

As Christian continues through the Interpreter’s House, he sees a roaring fire that cannot be extinguished, even as someone continually pours water on it. He learns that Satan seeks to destroy our faith, but Christ continually sustains and strengthens the faith He has begun in us.

Through the scene of the palace, we also learn that believers are called to actively fight the good fight of faith. Though we face opposition and spiritual battles, we must persevere with courage, trusting in Christ to preserve us.

The Law Condemns, but Grace Justifies (Dusty Room)

As Christian enters the Interpreter’s House, he learns two important lessons through the Dusty Room and the story of Passion and Patience. The Dusty Room shows that God’s Law reveals our sins, but our own efforts cannot make us righteous. Only through God’s grace and faith in Christ can we be justified.

Through Passion and Patience, we also learn that earthly pleasures cannot bring lasting satisfaction. Instead, we should fix our hope on heaven and live with eternity in mind.

God’s Grace in Seeking Christ

As Christian reaches the Wicket Gate, we see how many obstacles have tried to keep him from seeking Christ. Yet God graciously brings him through those obstacles and leads him into the narrow way.

Through Christian’s journey, we learn that it is God’s grace that enables sinners to come to Christ. We also learn the importance of heeding God’s Word, which gives us the truth and understanding we need to continue in the way of life.

Reject worldly Wisdom

On his way to the wicket gate, Christian meets Worldly Wiseman, who convinces him that there is an easier way to be freed from his burden. Christian follows his advice toward Legality, only to find himself in greater danger with an even heavier burden.

Through Christian’s mistake, we learn that worldly wisdom can lead us away from God’s truth. True wisdom begins with fearing the Lord, so we must seek wisdom from God and reject self-righteousness and empty religion.

Pursuing Christ When the Journey Gets Hard

As Christian begins his journey, he meets Obstinate and Pliable, who respond very differently to the truth. When the journey becomes difficult and Christian and Pliable fall into the Swamp of Despair, Pliable turns back while Christian presses on.

Through their experiences, we learn the importance of responding to God’s Word with obedience, persevering when following Christ becomes difficult, and trusting the Lord for help when we face fear, doubt, and discouragement.

The Burden of Sin

What is the burden of sin and what shall we do about it? We consider a few Scripture passages to gain an understanding of this burden and how we must run to the Light of Christ to find true spiritual relief from the crushing weight of sin. The first doc below is an intro message regarding this series and schedule, the second doc the lesson itself.
